HMAS Albatross

Delivering major upgrades in a live environment at the Navy’s only air base in Australia.

HMAS Albatross, based in Nowra, is the largest operating Naval establishment and the Royal Australian Navy’s only air station. It provides air support to the fleet through four naval helicopter Squadrons of EC-135 and Seahawk helicopters and a fifth Squadron of unmanned aerial vehicles.

In 2015, the air base needed a significant upgrade to improve operational efficiency, occupational health and safety and meet the forecast future needs of the facility. Based on our expertise and strength in the defence sector, Bureau Veritas was appointed as project manager for the third stage of the redevelopment.

The work involved 22 building and infrastructure elements including upgrades to trunk engineering services, improved working conditions, security improvements, upgrades to buildings to meet modern standards and the construction of new facilities.

All work was conducted in a live Defence environment with strict security protocols in place to protect sensitive information, aircraft and equipment. Our experience in working on live sites including airports, casinos, hospitals and banking helped to plan for and overcome any challenges. We also sequenced the activity of contractors and other consultants to minimise any disruption to base operations.

Note: APP Corporation Pty Limited (The APP Group) was initially contracted for this project. The APP Group was acquired by Bureau Veritas in December 2024.
