Sydney Olympics 2000
The Olympics have produced a series of logistical challenges that have required extensive project management knowledge and expertise. Our qualified staff have met the challenge and in the lead up to and duration of the Olympics a number of our staff will be seconded to OCA and SOCOG to manage a variety of tasks including the following.
Development Manager for Olympic Football
Over a period of 6 months, Bureau Veritas managed the delivery of the Olympic Overlay Works for the Sydney Football Stadium and was also the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games' Site Managers. The Overlay Works involved the conversion of over 25,000m² of the Stadium to support the Competition Management, Overseas Broadcast and Technology functions. There was considerable design, construction management and operational issues to resolve, and to a strict timetable.
This all had to be done around the existing Stadium booking schedule, with the National Rugby League finals series finishing only 20 days before the first Olympic event. The work also included the complete replacement of the Field of Play with new turf specially grown in Coffs Harbour for the purpose. Bureau Veritas managed the preparation, delivery and installation of the new turf, and then oversaw its preparation as an international quality football pitch.
Road Events Coordinator
Bureau Veritas was contracted to play an overall coordination role in the Olympic road events, triathlon, marathon and road cycling. Our team provided inter agency operational support and communications including the production of a special road events handbook. The road events did not have a clearly defined venue and special consideration was given to the many non ticketed spectators. Bureau Veritas met the challenge and created an integrated Road Event Management Plan to provide facilities and resources for the designated gathering places.
Development Management for Main Press Conference
The largest media centre in the history of the Olympics required high levels of quality control during the construction and operational phases. Bureau Veritas managed the overlay process for this highly customised, state of the art venue which will housed media from around the world during the Olympic period.
We were also appointed site managers for the Games period to ensure the mammoth communications hub was kept running smoothly 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Note: APP Corporation Pty Limited (The APP Group) was initially contracted for this project. The APP Group was acquired by Bureau Veritas in December 2024.
