An efficient and reliable road connection between Whangārei and Auckland.
The Northland Corridor is a significant 100km, four-lane motorway programme between Warkworth and Whangārei. The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) is developing Section 1 Warkworth to Te Hana – Ara Tūhono to be delivered as a Public Private Partnership between NZTA and Northway Consortium (ACCIONA and Aberdeen Investments).
Bureau Veritas, in joint venture with Arup and Tonkin + Taylor, has been appointed Independent Reviewer, providing independent assurance and certification services across the design, construction and completion phases of the project. In the role, we will deliver proactive assurance that supports a timely and confident road opening.
Warkworth to Te Hana – Ara Tūhono is a Road of National Significance that will connect to the Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway. The project is 26km long and includes a 1km twin tunnel to be bored in the Dome Valley and three interchanges located at Warkworth, Wellsford and Te Hana.
To the project, Bureau Veritas brings significant assurance leadership and experience operating within complex transport infrastructure environments, honed on projects such as West Gate Tunnel, North East Link, and Western Harbour Tunnel stages 1 and 2.

- unlocking economic growth and productivity by moving people and freight efficiently, quickly, and safely.
- improved travel time between Warkworth, Wellsford and Te Hana
- reduced heavy traffic on State Highway 1 through Wellsford and Te Hana, with the removal of nearly 1000 heavy vehicles per day
- reduced congestion through the Wellsford main street
- a high quality, safe new route with improved geometry and gradients
- efficient connection to the Warkworth and Wellsford town centres through well located and convenient interchanges
- improved corridor resilience through the provision of a reliable additional route separate to the existing State Highway 1.
